Night Navigation Skills

Saturday, 10 Oct 2020

5:30pm – 9:00pm

This develops the navigation skills acquired on the previous ‘Navigation Skills’.

This night navigation walk is aimed at both walkers and off-road runners wanting to gain confidence and find new skills if they find themselves having to navigate during the dark especially as the darker nights draw in. It teaches the skills you need to be able to get yourself off the hill safely. It will also teach you to select the suitable navigational techniques to cross open country and moorland.

The course is taught in areas with access to open country and involve periods where you’ll be navigating away from paths and tracks.

The course will consist of 2 parts. We will have a brief refresher session then walk straight out onto the moor and put theory into practice using the surrounding paths, tracks and moorland.

Bring your own map and compass (OS Explorer OL1 1:25,000 The Peak District Dark Peak Area). WildWays will bring a few spares if you forget or if the Dark Peak is not your primary outdoor activity area.

Don’t forget your head torch (and spare batteries).

Level:    Individuals who can use a map and compass and are comfortable at navigating short distances off-path but would like to practise night-time navigation.

Why choose this walk?

  • It’s a safe environment for you to practise your new skills
  • It’ll be fun and stress free
  • You’ll come away feeling more confident and ready to practise your new skills.

Aims:

  • To make you more confident navigating paths and tracks, as well as short distances away from them.
  • To allow you to devise and follow your own walking/ running routes.

Course content:

We will spend our time exploring, on and off path, on the iconic Peak District plateau of Kinder Scout. We will head out to find Madwoman’s Stones, the Woolpacks, Kinder Downfall and the Druid’s Stone – all impressive focal points on the Peak District’s highest mountain.

We will be moving at walking pace on tracks and paths with a little off-path open moorland.

Over the evening we’ll aim to cover the following skills or techniques:

  • Accurate compass work
  • Pacing
  • Negotiating difficult terrain
  • Strategic decision making
  • Responsibilities, safety
  • Equipment selection

Course Ratio:

There will be a maximum ratio of 1 walking guide to 5 participants. This enables WildWays to tailor the course to your ability so that you can develop your skills swiftly and safely.
